In the news this week, the City of Santa Clarita is once again pursuing the open space project??¦this sounds great! Except when you read the fine print!
The City is in hopes of passing the burden of purchasing the lands with a annual tax assessment of about $25.00 per homeowner, per year. With a maximum $1-per-year adjustment attached to this assessment, and if it were to go into effect each year, opponents state that this tax could end up at $55.00 per year.
Just about three-quarters of the parcels that could be acquired are outside of City limits. About a quarter - 27.5 percent - are in the city.
I??™ll be looking for a map of these parcels as some opponents are quoted as saying ???Val Verde and Castaic should be writing us thank you letters if this passes??? I really am not aware of exactly which parcels the City is hoping to aquire. This statement just sounds like more of the same division between the residents of Santa Clarita and the outlying areas, which fall under the Los Angeles County boundaries.
In the previous vote taken in October of 2005 the majority of homeowners said no to the Cities proposal, however of the 49,500 ballots mailed only 17,257 were returned by the deadline, 9,154 ballots marked no and 8,103 marked yes.
For the new ballot, its expected to go out around ballots would probably go out the 25th of May. Vote! Your voice is important weather you are for or against this proposal.
